Recently, a few friends and I got together for dinner. We wanted to go to Zeppoli in Collingswood, NJ but we couldn’t get a reservation.
We decided to go to El Sitio instead.
So here’s the deal, I’m generally a positive person. I like to concentrate on the good things in life and forget about the bad. It might not be the best way but it’s served me well over the years. The thing is, I didn’t love my experience at El Sitio.
I have been there before and have liked it but this Saturday night fell short. We had a reservation and were seated – no problem. The server opened our wine (it’s a BYOB) and he told us the specials. We started talking and didn’t look at the menus by the time the server came back to take our order. My friend told him we weren’t ready yet and we weren’t in a rush.
I don’t know why she told him this – I mean I didn’t want to rush but for future reference, it’s going to take a while anyway, the server doesn’t need an excuse!
We finally got his attention and gave our order. He brought our appetizers out in a reasonable time.
We got the plantain/cheese empanadas and the beef empanadas. My recommendation; just get the plantain/cheese, stay away from the beef (they were dry and tasteless).
Then, we waited and waited and waited and waited and waited.
Finally, my friend asked the waiter if he was waiting for us to signal him to serve the next course. And, he actually said he was waiting for us! What? I don’t even believe that! She said there must have been a miscommunication but anyway, we’re ready.
He did bring the next course immediately, which was soup for two of us and salad for one. The soup was a potato/seafood soup with mozzarella. The broth was good but the mozzarella was a mess…it was just so stringy.
I couldn’t get it off my spoon and into my mouth. There’s nothing worse than talking to somebody and then they have to say, “you have cheese on your mouth” and then you have to take care of the string of cheese that is hanging from your mouth to your bowl. Um, embarrassing!
The entrees came, and guess what, I didn’t love mine. It was chicken with chimichurri sauce. Now, I love me some chimichurri sauce. Unfortunately, it was like marinated in the sauce without any sauce on the side. Can you guess what else it was? …Dry…
We didn’t get dessert but the other girls got coffee.
When the server dropped our folder off (I’m not sure what those fake leather books that hold your check are called) there was no bill in it. Then we had to try to get his attention for the next 10 minutes. Then he brought the real check – with a charge for four coffees instead of two. Then we had to wait while he fixed it. Finally, we were paid, sign, sealed, and delivered.
I also saw one of the owners walking around quite a bit and she never stopped by our table. I mean, they don’t have to but it would have been nice.
To sum up my experience, it was a lot of waiting for not so much…
